For people living with serious mental illness, finding meaningful work can feel out of reach. Yet at Gateway, we know that mental health and employment go hand in hand. When members step into real-world job roles through our supported employment programs, they gain more than a paycheck—they gain confidence, dignity, and independence.

The Power of Transitional Employment

Gateway’s Transitional, Supported, and Independent Employment Programs provide structured opportunities for members to learn job skills, establish healthy routines, and build the confidence needed to sustain long-term recovery. These programs are rooted in the belief that meaningful work is a cornerstone of wellness.

In 2024 alone:

  • 24 members started a Transitional Employment Program,
  • 4 members began a new Supported Employment Program, and
  • 21 members launched their own independent jobs.

Every one of these opportunities represents a step toward stability, independence, and renewed hope.

Partnerships That Open Doors

Gateway’s employment programs wouldn’t be possible without strong partnerships with local employers who believe in the value of recovery through work. Companies like Aramark, Project Host, MetLife, and the Swamp Rabbit Cafe have created job opportunities that meet both business needs and member goals.

Through our long-standing collaboration with Aramark, members have worked in dining services at the South Carolina Governor’s School, Bob Jones University and North Greenville University. These roles give members hands-on experience in food service, customer interaction, and teamwork—all while strengthening the skills needed for long-term success.

MetLife has welcomed Gateway members into their mailroom, providing structured roles that build confidence and responsibility. Project Host and the Swamp Rabbit Cafe have opened their kitchen doors, offering opportunities for culinary training and community engagement.

These employer partnerships are more than just jobs—they’re bridges to dignity, independence, and meaningful connection.

Building Confidence Through Work

When members participate in job training for mental health recovery, they gain more than technical skills. They learn to show up each day, contribute to a team, find independence and see their abilities recognized.

For some, Transitional Employment serves as the first step back into the workforce after years of isolation. For others, Supported or Independent Employment helps them maintain stability and grow professionally. In every case, the result is the same: greater self-esteem, stronger community ties, and renewed hope.

Work and Wellness Go Hand in Hand

Employment at Gateway isn’t just about earning a paycheck. It’s about healing, growth, and recovery. By offering real-world work experiences and connecting with trusted community partners, Gateway proves every day that work and wellness are deeply connected.

Together with our employer partners, Gateway is helping members move from surviving to thriving—one job, one opportunity, and one relationship at a time.
