In a world where mental illness affects nearly one in four people, models that foster long-term recovery are urgently needed. Gateway’s Clubhouse Model is an answer to this need.

Clubhouse International, which was founded in 1994, has the goal of ending social and economic isolation for people with mental illness by growing the number and quality of Clubhouse rehabilitation programs worldwide.

Gateway, founded in 1984, was the first Clubhouse model in South Carolina. Now, Gateway serves as a Clubhouse International training base, having trained nearly 3,000 colleagues to date to replicate the model in their communities.

So, how does the Clubhouse Model work?

A Structured, Purposeful Day

Gateway emphasizes its “work-ordered day,” where members and staff work together to run the Clubhouse, managing meals, administration, and upkeep, mirroring a typical workplace routine. This structure provides members with meaningful roles, fostering routine, responsibility, and dignity — key components for mental resilience over time.

Fulfilling Employment Pathways

Employment is central: Clubhouse International reports a 42% employment rate at accredited Clubhouses, which is double that of standard public mental health services. Gateway supports members through Transitional, Supported, and Independent Employment programs, with vocational support to help them build long-term careers.

Research shows that sustained employment enhances self-esteem, social engagement, and overall quality of life. Gateway’s local employment partnerships with organizations like MetLife, Swamp Rabbit Cafe, and Bob Jones University provide inroads for members to start fresh in their careers.

Lowering Hospitalization and Healthcare Costs

Clubhouse Memberships are linked to reduced psychiatric hospitalization. Globally, Clubhouses deliver a year of holistic recovery services at the average cost of a two-week hospitalization. Gateway’s model demonstrates that consistent community engagement drives down emergency care and increases stability. The professional staff and support system the Clubhouse provides also allows members a wider network of resources and support, should they need additional care.

Social Connection as a Therapeutic Foundation

Isolation worsens mental health. Clubhouses foster close friendships: members report more meaningful relationships and reliable support networks compared to non‑members. At Gateway, daily programming, regular socials, and events combat social isolation and build peer support, forming a powerful antidote to loneliness and stigma. Gateway even offers socials held every major holiday, providing a place for members who lack familial support.

Safe, Stable Housing as a Cornerstone of Recovery

Housing is a fundamental need, especially for people living with serious mental illness. Without a stable home, long-term recovery is almost impossible. Gateway’s housing program directly addresses this by helping members secure affordable, safe, and supportive living environments. Gateway owns 70 apartments near the Clubhouse, and in 2024, approximately half of Gateway’s active members lived in apartments owned by the organization.

Gateway staff also help members navigate applications, access rental assistance, and connect to community resources, regardless of whether members live in Gateway-owned housing. The Clubhouse Model views housing as part of a comprehensive support system, empowering members to live independently while staying connected to a strong community.

A Path to Sustainable Wellness

In the words of Gateway member Adrian, “I consider my Gateway friends to be family because I see them more than my real family members. They’ve seen me at my highs and lows, yet they still accept me, and are still glad to see me when I come to the Clubhouse every day. I’m so grateful for everything Gateway has given me: a home, the chance to do meaningful work in or outside of the Clubhouse as I wish, and opportunities to have fun with the friends I’ve made here.”

Gateway’s 40-year legacy stands as a testament to the lasting power of the Clubhouse Model. Through vocational and housing support, social connection, skill-building, and advocacy, Gateway creates a lifelong community rooted in dignity, purpose, and belonging. The sense of welcome you feel when you walk through Gateway’s doors is undeniable, but the impact reaches far beyond its walls.
